H2O for Communities

Expanding Access to Clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene

Overview

H2O for Communities is the flagship project of JDI's clean water and sanitation initiative, designed to improve access to safe water and hygiene infrastructure in underserved communities. The project began in 2019 when the Iwa Community in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State was identified through social media as a community in urgent need of clean water and sanitation support. While the COVID-19 pandemic delayed immediate intervention, JDI resumed engagement and conducted a comprehensive field assessment in 2021.

Our Approach

JDI implemented a multi-sectoral WASH intervention, combining infrastructure development, strategic partnerships, and behaviour change education. Key actions included: construction of a modern 6-stall toilet facility for students and staff; installation of an incinerator to support proper waste management; connection of the sanitation facility to a reliable nearby water source; and refurbishment of the healthcare centre's borehole. This work was delivered in partnership with Mainstream Foundation, Just Fix It Synergy, and the Centre for School Health Education and Environmental Hygiene. Students also received hygiene education and cleaning supplies to ensure proper use and sustainability of the facilities.
